About this condition
Muscle cramps and spasms are sudden, involuntary contractions of one or more muscles causing pain and temporary inability to use the affected muscle. Common causes include dehydration, mineral deficiencies (especially calcium, magnesium, or potassium), overexertion, or prolonged sitting or standing. Most cramps resolve on their own with stretching, massage, and hydration.
