About this condition
Renal dysplasia is a birth defect where one or both kidneys do not develop properly before birth, resulting in abnormal kidney tissue formation. The affected kidney may be smaller than normal and contain cysts or scar tissue that prevents proper function. This condition can range from mild cases affecting only part of one kidney to severe cases where both kidneys are damaged, potentially requiring dialysis or transplant.
